Days Between Dates — Direct Answer

To calculate days between dates: subtract the earlier date from the later. From January 1 to February 1 = 31 days. Add 1 for inclusive counting (both endpoints). Business days exclude weekends — a typical month has 21–23 business days. Leap years add 1 day to the year.

How to Calculate Days Between Dates

Date math uses Julian day numbers or simple subtraction.

Days = Later Date − Earlier Date
Business Days = Days − Weekends − Holidays

Where:

  • Weekends = Saturdays + Sundays
  • Holidays = federal or company holidays

How to count days manually

Method 1: Simple subtraction

From March 15 to March 22 = 22 − 15 = 7 days

Method 2: Inclusive counting

From March 15 to March 22 inclusive = 22 − 15 + 1 = 8 days (both endpoints)

Choose inclusive or exclusive based on context. Deadlines usually count exclusive; vacation days usually inclusive.

How to handle month boundaries

Count remaining days in first month, full days in middle months, then days in last month.

Example: Jan 20 to Mar 10

  • Jan: 31 − 20 = 11 days remaining
  • Feb: 28 days (or 29 in leap year)
  • Mar: 10 days used
  • Total: 11 + 28 + 10 = 49 days

How to count business days

Business days = calendar days − weekends − holidays.

Example: 30 calendar days starting Monday

  • ~8 weekend days (4 Saturdays + 4 Sundays)
  • = 22 business days

Common Days Between Dates Mistakes

Mistake 1: Inclusive vs exclusive counting

Some dates count both endpoints (inclusive), some count only the difference (exclusive).

Fix: Ask "does the start date count?" Deadlines usually don't. Vacation days usually do.

Mistake 2: Ignoring leap years

Every 4 years (except centuries not divisible by 400) adds 1 day.

Fix: For any date range crossing February, check if the year is divisible by 4 and not by 100 (unless by 400).

Mistake 3: Forgetting holidays

Federal holidays = 11 per year. Business days drop accordingly.

Fix: Subtract specific holidays, not just weekends.

Inclusive vs Exclusive Counting

Inclusive counting

  • Rule: Count both endpoints
  • Formula: Days = End − Start + 1
  • Use: Vacation days, project duration

Example: Jan 1 to Jan 3 inclusive = 3 days

Exclusive counting

  • Rule: Count only the difference
  • Formula: Days = End − Start
  • Use: Interest calculations, age

Example: Jan 1 to Jan 3 exclusive = 2 days

Which Should You Use?

Inclusive for "how many days am I there" questions. Exclusive for "how many days until" questions.
